What is Donately?
Donately is an online donation platform that helps anyone raise money for their cause. We work with over 1,000 organizations, churches, universities, and individuals to help simplify their donor experience and grow their online revenue through online fundraising.
Belk is utilizing Donately's best-in-class donation form and fundraising platform to power this year's online Charity Sale. Donately has no up-front costs or out-of-pocket expenses and has some of the highest-rated customer service in the industry.
If you're interested in using Donately after the Charity Sale is completed, please reach out to us and we would love to chat!
What is Stripe?
Stripe is our payment processing partner and a leader in the digital payment space. We partner with Stripe in order to enable some of the most advanced technology in the industry. With their world-class security tools and low pricing, we have found them to be the perfect compliment to Donately.
Your Charity will need a Stripe account in order to enable the form to collect payments from donors, as well as to transfer the proceeds from the Charity Sale into your bank account. Stripe does not require any upfront costs or out-of-pocket expenses. After signing into Donately for the first time, we will walk you through how to create or link a Stripe account to Donately.
Can I use PayPal instead?
For the purposes of the Belk Sale, only credit cards and ACH via Stripe are offered as payment methods. However, if your organization decides to use Donately after the Belk sale for your online fundraising, you would be able to use PayPal as well!
How much does it cost?
For the purpose of our arrangement with Belk, each charity will only need to be on our Startup tier. This tier has no monthly or fixed costs and charges a 4% platform fee on each donation. Keep in mind, every donor is presented with the option to cover the fees from their sale. If every donor elects to do this, Donately and Stripe are effectively free!
For each transaction, Stripe also charges a payment processing fee. For the Charity Sale, the donor has the choice of buying their ticket via credit card or ACH (direct bank transfer). Depending on the payment method, Stripe charges the following rates:
- For credit card donations, Stripe's rates are 2.9% + $0.30. They offer a nonprofit discounted rate of 2.2% + $0.30. See this page for more details.
- For ACH (bank-to-bank) donations, Stripe charges 0.8%, with a maximum fee of $5.
Both of these fees are deducted from each donation and require no out-of-pocket payment to either platform.
What benefits are Donately providing Belk?
Donately is helping Belk move what was previously an in-person only event to the web. We are doing this with an advanced donation form that allows the donor to quickly pick their nonprofit organization represented through Belk, and seamlessly provide them their ticket for the Charity Sale.
Is it safe?
Yes! Safety is both Donately and Stripe’s top priority. Both companies are fully PCI compliant and have some of the most advanced fraud protection available.
Do we need to participate in online Charity Sale to participate in in-store sales?
No, you do not need to participate in the online portion of Belk's Charity Sale in order to also be eligible for the in-store sale of Charity Sale coupons. You will need to contact your local Belk store for more information about signing up for the in-store sale.
How do we receive our proceeds?
Once someone selects your charity as the beneficiary for their Charity Sale coupon, the proceeds from the sale will be available in your Stripe account. The funds will then be directly deposited into the bank account you linked to Stripe in their sign up process.
Are we able to receive a check instead to collect proceeds from online sales?
No, you will need an active bank account linked to your Stripe account in order to receive a direct transfer of your proceeds to your organization's bank account.
Sign Up Process
Who can sign up?
Any charity in Belk's 16-state footprint is eligible to participate in Belk's Charity Sale! In order to sign up and be eligible to sell Charity Day tickets via Belk's online portal, you'll need:
- To be an employee, volunteer, or board member of an eligible charity
- The charity's EIN (Tax ID)
- The charity's bank account & routing numbers
Eventually, you will need to link your organization's bank account to Stripe in order to receive the proceeds from the donations. This link is both essential and mandatory.
Stripe requires a website, but what if my charity doesn't have one?
As a part of Stripe's verification process, they do ask for your charity's website. As Donately works with hundreds of small nonprofits, we recognize that you may not have your own website. With that in mind, you can always use your Facebook page as your website. Just be sure that it's the URL of your page. Typically, this is something like "https://facebook.com/mycharity"
How do donors get their tickets?
After completing the Charity Sale form, they should receive an email promptly with a unique bar code, good for $10 off their purchase during Belk's Charity Sale event.
Will they only be able to use their coupon at the store associated with my charity?
No! Coupon holders can use the coupon at any participating Belk location. More details will be given about the sale specifically by Belk at a later date.
How will donors find my charity?
When you signed up, you selected the closest Belk location to your charity. Similarly, when donors go to the Belk Charity Sale purchase form, they will choose the Belk location closest to them. If they select the store that you selected, your charity will be presented on the list. Once they select their charity, they continue on to finish purchasing their Charity Sale coupon.
Can people give more than $5?
Yes! While the donation form will not allow folks to give less than $5 to get a coupon to the Charity Sale event, they are welcome to contribute more than $5 to your organization.
Note, regardless of the size of the donation, each person is only able to redeem a single Charity Sale coupon for $10.
What does it mean if people cover the processing fees?
If donors elect to cover the processing fees for their donation, they would be giving 100% of the intended donation to your organization. This election satisfies both the processing fees from Stripe and Donately.

What if I don't see my charity on the Charity Sale form?
